Mixtape Monday: Bok Bok

I keep on being amazed by the sounds come from the UK this year. Therefore, this week’s Mixtape Monday features the third London-based producer/DJ in a row. This time it’s the co-owner of the successful label Night Slugs, Bok Bok.

“Designer, label owner, producer, DJ, possessor of a finely crafted moustache.” This is how the online record shop Juno briefly describes Alex Sushon, aka Bok Bok. Together with L-Vis 1990 he runs the label Night Slugs, that released some great EPs this year that are featured in the best-of-the-year lists of many critics.

Bok Bok is part of the post-dubstep/future garage/bass/call-it-whatever-you-want sound that has been coming from the UK this year. In previous Mixtape Monday’s this sound was already featured with mixes from Jamie XX and SBTRKT. These sounds explore the boundaries of genres like grime, dubstep, and house and blend them into something that keeps sounding fresh to me.

Bok Bok is also partly responsible for these fresh sounds and besides running a successful label and producing music, he’s also a great DJ which can be heard in this mix that he crafted for FACT last week. Starting out with some fine deephouse tunes, Bok Bok soon takes things to another level with some serious peaktime tracks including the ghetto tech from Deeon, the dry beats of DB-X, and the techno of Ostgut Ton’s Fiedel. Enjoy!
