Mixtape Monday: EQD aka Shed

While the sun has been showing up more and more during the last days, it’s still February meaning it is winter and it is cold. Nothing goes better with these clear but cold days than traditional techno music. Therefore, this week’s Mixtape Monday presents a mix from the Berlin-based EQD aka Shed: “Techno in the truest sense”. Also, the loudest in the Mixtape Monday series so far.

With two acclaimed albums (Shedding The Past and The Traveller) and already classic tracks such as Warped Mind and Another Wedged Chicken, Rene Pawlowitz aka Shed is a respected figure in today’s techno scene. With his distinctive sounds, he has released EPs on prestigious labels like Ostgut Ton, Delsin and Styrax Leaves and currently he releases his EP-series Wax and EQD via the Berlin-based distributor Hardwax.

Pawlowitz’s music clearly pushes things forward but it is also deeply rooted in techno traditions. This means that his music differs from the contemporary music that often sounds ‘overproduced’. In his music you’re unlikely to encounter epic breaks, melodies, or vocals. Instead the music sounds unpolished, raw and centers around loops, shifting rhythms, and different textures.

All of Pawlowitz’s aliases have different approaches. Under the Shed moniker you’ll find electronic music with different tempos and ambient soundscapes, while his aliases STP and The Panamax Project are more dubstep oriented. The mix that you can listen to below was done under his EQD guise. This series of EPs, released via Hardwax and obviously inspired by Basic Channel (featured here two weeks ago), is his outlet for dancefloor oriented sounds. Expect interesting beats and highly syncopated rhythms. As said above, it’s also the loudest in this mixtape series so far, so be prepared!
