Mixtape Monday: Nebraska

The well received EPs of producer Nebraska on Rush Hour records were definitely among my personal musical highlights of 2010. His spirited Detroit house tracks, full of influences from jazz and disco, turned out to be effective material for dancefloors and were suitable for home listening as well.  With one track in Resident Advisor’s ‘top 50 tracks of 2010’ as well, it’s time to check out the latest mixtape from Nebraska.

Nebraska is the alter ego of the UK-based Ali Gibbs. After having released some EPs and an album during the last decade, it wasn’t really until his (reissued) releases on Rush Hour in 2009 and 2010 that people took on his music en masse and that the name Nebraska became a synonym for great Detroit house.

The EPs that established Nebraska’s name reveal a deep-rooted love for jazz, soul, and disco. Also, influences from accomplished beatdown producers like Theo Parrish and Moodymann clearly can be heard. I’m a big fan of this sound and therefore this set was a nice holiday gift last December.

This mixtape was done as a podcast for the London and Leeds based clubnight Louche. Even if you’re familiar with the sounds of Nebraska, I’m sure you’ll be surprised by this set since it contains not only his trademark detroit house sounds but also a lot of great jazz and Motown tracks. The tracklist can be found here and includes music from Kerri Chandler, 3 Chairs and Tenorio Jr.
