Mixtape Monday: SCB

The Mixtape Monday series has already seen several acts that blur the borders between different genres. Examples of this are earlier posted mixes by Jamie XX, Bullion and FaltyDL that all manage to build bridges between different genres. This week’s mix by SCB (also known as Scuba) is no exception to this and alternates between dubstep, house, and techno.

SCB is the alter ego of the Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner Paul Rose. Rose has been very succesful as a producer under his Scuba moniker. As Scuba he released acclaimed full-length albums and several great EPs. Next to producing his own music, Rose in 2003 founded Hotflush Recordings. With this label he helped to establish names like Mount Kimbie, Joy Orbison, and Shackleton.

While Rose has been very succesful under his Scuba alter ego that focuses on dubstep/bass oriented sounds, his SCB project reflects his interest in four-four rhythms. While retaining his typical floating and spacy sounds, Rose’s SCB guise distances itself from the pure dubstep sounds and instead open-mindedly blends different genres.

The mix below was done a while ago for the MNML SSGS podcast-series but is still one of the finest in their series if you’d ask me. The mix includes music from among others Donato Dozzy and Horizontal Ground and alternates between dubstep, techno and house. In the words of the MNML SSGS blog: “Gush… gosh… ladies and gentlemen, SCB”.
